With dedicated fans wanting to get their hands on a Puff Dress, Selkie is the brand you need to know.
If you're regularly scrolling through Tiktok, you've likely come across Selkie's 'Puff Dress' that feels fit for a princess. The brand itself is known for its ultra-feminine pieces and was founded in 2018 by Kimberly Gordon, who previously co-owned Wildfox.
Selkie doesn't just produce fairytale-esque clothing, but is also challenging the lack of diversity within the surrounding industry. In particular, the representation of all bodies. Currently, Selkie's sizes range from XXS-5X. This is an extensive size range in comparison to most retailers, but to Gordon, this was a natural decision and she believes all brands should be doing the same.
"The goal is about women being able to find themselves again, or arm themselves, or be confident; to do that means to open that up to all different types of women, to have a diverse size range — which I think should be mandatory at this stage for all brands, but it's not" - Kimberley Gordon, Founder of Selkie.
Selkie has been wildly successful since it launched and retailers are picking up on this. Online retailer Revolve began to stock Selkie on their site and agreed to stock above an XL. For Gordon, this was a big achievement as she knew it would take a lot of work to get large retailers to stock plus-sizes.
“It's insane that we shut large women out of fashion. No matter how you frame it, not offering sizing is fatphobic and inherently bigoted” - Kimberley Gordon, Founder of Selkie.
Selkie is not yet considered a sustainable brand due to the use of polyester (which is damaging to the environment). However, Selkie is low-waste. They only have a small inventory and hold pre-sales of bestsellers to ensure no dresses are wasted. Very often, only 15-20 of each dress is made (as you can imagine, getting your hands on a Selkie dress can be competitive!).
Selkie is a brand I would love to work with in the future. I would be particularly interested in image-making roles, such as art direction or graphic design for their digital diary (which acts as an online magazine, showcasing their latest collections). I feel their feminine and vintage look aligns with my personal aesthetic, and I would thrive in a role creating imagery in a style that I’m passionate about. Furthermore, I truly love that Selkie places such importance on ensuring inclusivity, which sadly, is rare for fashion brands. I know that when I enter the industry, ensuring that everyone feels represented is something I will strive for in my work. I believe that Selkie is one to watch within the fashion industry. Having only existed for 4 years, Selkie's popularity is extraordinary and is bound to grow. I'm excited to see which direction the brand takes next.
