Why visual communication is so important within all industries.
As part of my current University project, I have been working in a group to create a magazine. One of my roles within the group is Graphic Design. Being able to experience this role has sparked my interest and inspired me to learn more about what it is to be a graphic designer working in fashion.
The American Institute of Graphic Arts defines this role as “The art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content.”. Ultimately, this means graphic design is a way of visual communication. Within fashion, it is what connects the brand with the target audience.
“We can’t separate graphic design from fashion” - Ina Binandari, Coordinator at UIC Design
Fashion is an industry built on visuals, therefore, graphic designers are essential in the promotion of fashion. Without graphic design, brands would not be able to build a brand identity; clever design can completely transform a consumer's view of a brand. Decisions that may seem simple, such as a colour palette, can completely alter a brand and who its consumer is.
Graphic design has so many pathways within the industry, as after all, everything needs to be designed. From fashion shows, installations, hang tags, magazine spreads, social media content to branding. The opportunities seem endless, and more will arise with the growth of the metaverse.
“Fashion is more than a garment hanging on a rail in isolation. The brand message needs to reflect what the fashion label is really offering beyond a single purchase.” - Jay Hess, author of ‘Graphic Design in Fashion’.
What I personally came to love about graphic design while researching, is that you are not limited to a certain industry or area. There are so many options that are outside of fashion that also pique my interest. As a huge fan of music, the idea of creating graphics for albums and merchandise would be something I know I would really enjoy. I imagine being able to work with musicians to create designs that visually represent their music would be an incredible experience.
Overall, Graphic Design is a path I am currently leaning towards. While working on the magazine project, I have had the opportunity to create designs for front covers, articles, and social media content. I have thoroughly enjoyed the creative freedom design has allowed me. From gathering inspiration to experimentation and creating designs I’m proud of, I have loved each step of the graphic design process.
